I describe myself as The Peaceful Divorce Lawyer and I work with couples who are going through a separation or divorce to empower them to reach a peaceful, amiable separation and stay out of the Family court as I believe this approach will ensure a positive outcome for the family. I run Divorce Right and the Divorce Right Mediation Centre. I am a lawyer and a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner with many years of experience. I have also been trained as a collaborative law professional and this is my story.
I am passionate about people and relationships and I want to change the way families experience divorce and separation. I love the work I do and the way I do it. I want to make a difference by helping families who are going through one of the most stressful times of their lives, by assisting them to transition through to their new life after divorce in a calmer, kinder and more respectful way. I understand how important relationships and family are and how our relationships affect every aspect of our lives. I am constantly hearing clients who are separating complain about the how frustrating the process is and how damaging the experience has been for them. I believe the adversarial approach does not work for families.
Clients often find themselves in a situation where the conflict with their spouse has escalated to a destructive court battle. I have a passion to remove the bureaucracy and open the channels of communication, to start shifting the thinking and cultivate conversations of resolution. In the process I want to build humanity and empathy into the practice of the law because this is what separating families need. The existing system is for those who want to fight it out. There is no standardized system for those who want to work together to re-frame their families.
Hence the reason I launched Divorce Right. I teamed up with mediators, experienced family lawyers, financial planners, counselors, psychologists and technology professionals and formulated my plan for a better way to divorce. The approach I adopt to make the divorce process more amicable, smoother and kinder saw me win Australia’s top legal innovation award in 2016 and I was also recognized as Thought Leader of the Year in 2017 at the Women in Law Awards, the judges describing me as a trailblazer in family law and applauding my approach to making divorce a more amicable process, with a view to shaping the future of the procedure
